Azam Khan, a highly senior leader, was detained for nearly 23 months and has recently been released on bail. As a prominent figure within the Samajwadi Party, he commands a substantial support base in western Uttar Pradesh, predominantly among Muslim voters, according to sources. He is currently facing approximately 100 cases filed by the state government following the BJP ‘s rise to power in 2017, as per the source. Although he remained out of public engagement for an extended period, his influence in the Rampur-Moradabad region appears to be regaining momentum; however, he is keeping his plans confidential. Some sources indicate dissatisfaction with Akhilesh Yadav and suggest that during his challenging times, the Samajwadi Party leader did not take adequate measures to assist him in overcoming the charges framed against him.

Consequently, there is speculation that he may join the Bahujan Samaj Party or establish his own political entity soon. It will be intriguing to observe the extent of his electoral appeal. Even capturing a mere 1% of votes—an amount he previously attracted—could significantly impact the votes of Yadav and Muslim communities, both of which are considered vital supporters of the SP, according to sources. In a highly competitive contest, even a 1% shift in votes could be decisive source says.
