Until the last elections, the Congress party had been trying a combination of Jat and Dalit leaders at the top. In the last assembly elections, it was observed that many Dalits voted for the BJP, whereas in earlier times, they used to support the Congress party, according to sources. The Congress has selected prominent Jat leader Bhupinder Singh Hudda as the leader in the assembly and Rao Narender Singh, an OBC as the state president source says. This is probably at the behest of Rahul Gandhi, who wants the OBC to be given priority in the state source says. Though some leaders are opposing this new idea because they feel that Dalits always supported the party and now a change at the top is likely to demoralise the Dalits, directly affecting the prospects of the party in the coming days source says.
