D.K Shivkumar remains hopeful about occupying the Chief Minister's seat. The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka is actively pursuing the top political post in the state and is making concerted efforts to persuade the central leadership to support his candidacy, according to sources. Recently, he travelled to Delhi and went directly to Sonia Gandhi's office for a one-on-one discussion to explore possible solutions. It is reported that after hearing the deputy CM's views, Sonia Gandhi said Mallikarjun Kharge is unlikely to support his promotion for political reasons. She also mentioned that the number of MLAs supporting Shivkumar is insufficient to sway the decision, according to insider sources.
Additionally, she indicated she would speak with Kharge soon to resolve the issue, but expressed concern about the party's financial health, which is strained ahead of the upcoming elections in five states—Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi, and Rajasthan—where substantial funding is required. Sonia Gandhi emphasised to Shivkumar the importance of his role in securing donations from wealthy businessmen, which are crucial to the party’s electoral success. She also reassured him that the party is inclined to give the current party president, Mallikarjun Kharge, a second term. Shivkumar apparently perceives the party's longer-term strategic positioning and recognises the limitations of his current role, with implications for his future in the party, according to sources.
